The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a 38-year-old man over the alleged defilement of an eight-year-old girl in Fana village, Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The arrest was confirmed by the Secretary of the Kebbi Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence, Mr Nasir Idris, in a statement made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
According to the statement, the matter was reported by the survivor’s parents to the NSCDC in Kamba, where the necessary information was obtained. The survivor was subsequently taken to Mai Talle Tara SARC in Kalgo for medical examination and documentation, including the issuance of a medical report. The NSCDC thereafter proceeded with the alleged perpetrator to the NSCDC Kebbi State Command for detention and further legal procedures.
However, upon arrival at the command, the suspect reportedly complained of ill health. The officers declined to detain him until he was medically examined. A suggestion that the survivor’s parents should bear the medical expenses was rejected by members of the Technical Working Group on GBV, who insisted that such a responsibility should not be imposed on the survivor’s family.
Following discussions to resolve the matter, the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Nura Fingilla, took responsibility for the medical expenses, particularly as no relative of the suspect was available. The medical examination subsequently established that there was no serious medical condition.
Idris disclosed that NSCDC officers assured the Technical Working Group on GBV that the suspect would be presented before the appropriate court for further legal proceedings. The group also advised the NSCDC Kebbi Command to make appropriate use of its medical unit for the preliminary examination of suspects who report minor health complaints.
The identity of the suspect is still being withheld. The survivor is receiving support, and the case is expected to proceed to court upon the conclusion of the investigation. The NSCDC has not issued a separate statement on the matter, and the Kebbi State Police Command has not commented on the arrest.
The incident adds to a growing list of defilement cases in Kebbi State, where the NSCDC and the Nigeria Police Force have repeatedly arrested suspects over similar offences in recent years. In September 2025, the Kebbi State Police Command arrested two suspects for defiling minors. In June 2026, the NSCDC arrested a 42-year-old man for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl. The recurring nature of these cases has raised concerns among child rights advocates about the adequacy of protective measures for minors in the state and the speed of prosecutions.
For the family of the eight-year-old survivor, the arrest of the suspect is a step towards accountability. But the ordeal of the past days, including the medical examination and the legal process ahead, is a trauma that no child should have to endure. The case now rests with the courts, and the outcome will be watched closely by a community that has seen too many such cases end without meaningful consequences.
