Thirty-three Ghanaians, including twelve women, have been found at a camp in Anyigba, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria, after allegedly being lured into a fraudulent scheme promising travel to the United Kingdom. The group was intercepted during a raid by a special team from Ghana after relatives raised alarms over repeated demands for additional money from those who had travelled to Nigeria. Some members of the group claimed they had paid as much as GH¢300,000 in the hope of securing passage to the UK.
The circumstances surrounding their travel to Nigeria and the activities at the camp remain under investigation. The Ghanaians have denied that they were being prepared for illegal migration, insisting they were in Nigeria to participate in network marketing. They were reportedly staying at one of six camps in the Anyigba area.
The story, reported by GHOne TV journalist Peter Quao Adattor, detailed the operation and the accounts of those found at the location. According to the report, some of the Ghanaians had sold businesses and parted with significant sums of money after being led to believe that their stay in Nigeria was part of a process to secure travel to Europe.
One victim, Richmond Tucson, a 35-year-old drugstore owner, narrated his ordeal in a video shared on X. He explained that a marketing company identified as IGNITE promised to facilitate his travel to the United Kingdom. He shut down his drugstore business and handed it over to a friend in preparation for the journey. He was told he would transit through Nigeria. However, after arriving in the country, he has been unable to continue his journey to the UK. "I was a former registered nurse, but I stopped and started my own drug business in Accra, Lapaz. But I closed it and gave it to a friend when an opportunity came to travel to the UK. They asked me to transit, and I found myself here. But they told me the business is IGNITE, and they told me they sell products, so I am learning," he said.
The development has raised concerns about the methods used to recruit Ghanaians with promises of opportunities abroad, particularly where large sums of money are demanded from prospective travellers.
