Super Eagles Return to Abuja After 3-0 Guinea-Bissau Defeat Leaves Nigeria Chasing AFCON Qualification

Nigeria's Super Eagles have returned to Abuja following a damaging 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their second match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, leaving Eric Chelle's team three points behind the Group L leaders.

The Nigerian players and coaching crew arrived in Abuja on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, after Tuesday's encounter at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau, where goals from Franculino Djú, Mama Baldé and Álvaro Djaló handed Guinea-Bissau a convincing victory.

The result leaves Nigeria second in Group L with three points from two matches.

Guinea-Bissau sit top with six points after winning both of their opening fixtures, while Madagascar and Tanzania have one point each following their 1-1 draw on Tuesday.

Nigeria had begun the qualifying campaign positively, coming from behind to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo on Friday.

Ehsan Kari put Madagascar ahead after 16 minutes before George Ilenikhena equalised for Nigeria shortly before half-time. Substitute Moses Usor then scored in the 65th minute to complete the comeback.

Guinea-Bissau, meanwhile, opened their campaign with a 2-0 away victory over Tanzania, meaning Tuesday's meeting brought together the two teams that had won their opening matches.

Nigeria travelled to Bissau hoping to take control of the group but instead produced a difficult performance against a more effective home side.

Guinea-Bissau opened the scoring in the 15th minute.

Franculino found space around the Nigerian defence before curling his effort beyond goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and into the far corner.

The early goal gave the hosts confidence while Nigeria struggled to create the attacking opportunities required to draw level.

Coach Eric Chelle responded at half-time by introducing Moses Usor and Moses Simon for Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi.

The substitutions were intended to provide Nigeria with greater attacking threat, but Guinea-Bissau remained dangerous.

Mama Baldé doubled the hosts' advantage in the 66th minute, putting Nigeria in a considerably more difficult position.

The Super Eagles continued searching for a way back into the match.

One of Nigeria's best opportunities arrived in the 87th minute when Ilenikhena was denied from close range by Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Djoco Embadje.

Any remaining hope of a late Nigerian recovery disappeared in stoppage time.

Álvaro Djaló scored Guinea-Bissau's third goal in the fifth minute of added time to complete a 3-0 victory and send the home supporters into celebration.

The defeat was Chelle's first since taking charge of the Super Eagles.

After the game, the coach acknowledged that Guinea-Bissau deserved credit for their approach.

“They were more aggressive than us,” Chelle said while assessing Nigeria's performance.

He admitted that Guinea-Bissau played with greater intensity and personality and that his players struggled to find solutions against their opponents.

For Nigeria, the significance of the defeat extends beyond losing one qualifying match.

The format of Group L makes the battle with Guinea-Bissau particularly important.

Tanzania is one of the three co-hosts of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Kenya and Uganda and is therefore automatically qualified for the tournament.

Under the qualification format, only the highest-ranked team other than Tanzania qualifies from Group L.

Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are consequently competing for that available qualification position.

Guinea-Bissau currently occupies that position with a perfect six points.

Nigeria has three points, while Madagascar has one.

Although the qualifying campaign is still at an early stage, Nigeria can afford fewer mistakes if it is to overhaul Guinea-Bissau.

The three-goal defeat could also matter beyond the points because goal difference can become important when teams finish level.

Guinea-Bissau has now scored five goals without conceding across its opening two qualifiers.

Nigeria has scored two goals and conceded four.

The difference gives the Djurtus an additional early advantage as the campaign progresses.

Tuesday's result also continues Guinea-Bissau's ability to trouble Nigeria in AFCON qualifying competition.

The West African nation famously defeated the Super Eagles 1-0 in Abuja during qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria responded by winning the return fixture 1-0 in Bissau.

The latest result is considerably more damaging because Guinea-Bissau did not merely defeat Nigeria but did so by three unanswered goals.

It represents Guinea-Bissau's second victory over Nigeria in five meetings and one of the country's most significant recent international results.

The Super Eagles entered the qualification series without first-choice striker Victor Osimhen, who was replaced in the squad by Taiwo Awoniyi.

The Nigeria Football Federation announced before the qualifiers that Awoniyi had been called up after Osimhen became unavailable.

Awoniyi started against Guinea-Bissau but was replaced at half-time as Chelle attempted to change the direction of the match.

Nigeria's performance has subsequently generated questions about defensive organisation, intensity and the team's ability to respond when placed under pressure.

Former African Footballer of the Year Victor Ikpeba was among those who criticised the performance, particularly the defending.

Speaking after the encounter, Ikpeba questioned the team's fighting spirit and its heavy dependence on foreign-based players. His comments represent his assessment of the performance rather than an official explanation for the defeat.

For the Super Eagles, the immediate priority after returning to Abuja will be analysing what went wrong in Bissau and preparing for the next stage of qualification.

The mathematical position remains recoverable.

Nigeria is three points behind Guinea-Bissau with further qualifying matches still to be played, including fixtures that will provide opportunities for the standings to change.

But the structure of the group means finishing second behind Guinea-Bissau would not necessarily be enough.

Nigeria must ultimately finish above the other non-host teams if it wants to secure the qualification place available from Group L.

That reality makes the remaining matches considerably more important.

The Super Eagles have a strong AFCON history, having won the tournament three times, and expectations surrounding the national team remain high.

Missing the 2027 tournament would therefore represent a major setback for Nigerian football.

However, qualification will be decided by results rather than reputation.

Guinea-Bissau has established the early advantage by collecting all six available points, while Nigeria has taken three.

Madagascar remains within the contest on one point, while Tanzania's automatic qualification means its results can still influence the standings even though the co-host does not compete for the group's available qualification position.

The return to Abuja therefore marks the beginning of an important period of assessment for Chelle and his players.

Nigeria's opening victory over Madagascar demonstrated the team's ability to recover after falling behind, but the defeat in Bissau exposed problems the coaching staff will need to address before the next qualifiers.

For supporters, the Group L table now provides a simple picture: Guinea-Bissau has taken the early initiative, while Nigeria must chase.

The 3-0 defeat has not ended the Super Eagles' qualification campaign, but it has reduced their margin for error.

Nigeria's response in the remaining matches — particularly in the direct battle with Guinea-Bissau — will determine whether the country's return to Abuja becomes remembered merely as an early setback or as the result that ultimately damaged its journey to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
