A 29-year-old man identified as Ebikeme Seiye has been arrested in Bayelsa State over the alleged rape of a five-year-old girl, with the suspect now in police custody for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, by personnel of the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps, Amassoma Cluster, after the alleged incident was reported by the child's elder cousin, identified as Tobokeakpo Selekeme. Seiye is reported to be from Akede Community in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Reports on the precise location of the alleged assault differ. Some reports place the incident in Amassoma, while others identify Akede Community in Sagbama LGA as the location. Both accounts identify Seiye as the suspect and confirm his arrest by the Community Safety Corps' Amassoma Cluster.
According to the reports, the matter came to the attention of the Community Safety Corps after the girl's elder cousin reported the alleged assault.
Officers subsequently apprehended Seiye and questioned him over the allegation.
During preliminary questioning by the Community Safety Corps, Seiye reportedly admitted to sexually assaulting the child.
He was also reported to have claimed that he was under the influence of a substance locally referred to as “Kolos” at the time of the alleged offence.
The reported admission was made during preliminary questioning and has not been established as a judicial confession or tested before a court.
Following his arrest and questioning, the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps transferred Seiye to the Amassoma Police Divisional Headquarters for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The five-year-old child was subsequently taken for medical attention.
Reports published following the arrest said she was receiving treatment at a medical facility as authorities continued their investigation into the alleged assault.
No exact time for the alleged assault or the suspect's arrest has been reliably published.
The available reports establish the date of the arrest as September 30, 2026, but do not provide a confirmed clock time.
Police have also not publicly announced that Seiye has been formally charged before a court as of the latest reports.
The transfer to the Amassoma Police Divisional Headquarters means responsibility for the criminal investigation has moved from the Community Safety Corps to the Nigeria Police Force.
Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegation and determine the evidence available for any subsequent prosecution.
Although reports say Seiye admitted the act during questioning by the Community Safety Corps, criminal responsibility will ultimately be determined through the legal process if charges are brought against him.
His reported claim that he had consumed “Kolos” forms part of the account attributed to him during preliminary questioning and does not establish the circumstances of the alleged offence independently.
The case comes months after another sexual-assault allegation involving a child generated serious concern in Bayelsa State.
In March 2026, a 47-year-old man identified as Emi Sigah died after being subjected to corporal punishment in Ekeowe community, Southern Ijaw, following an allegation that he sexually assaulted a 10-year-old girl.
The Bayelsa State Police Command subsequently opened an investigation into Sigah's death and arrested four suspects. Police spokesperson Musa Mohammed said at the time that the investigation was being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yenagoa.
The latest case involving the five-year-old is different and is now being handled through the formal police investigation process.
The immediate sequence of events established by available reports is that the alleged assault was reported, personnel of the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps' Amassoma Cluster apprehended Seiye on September 30, he was questioned, and he was subsequently transferred to the Amassoma Police Divisional Headquarters.
The child, meanwhile, was taken for medical treatment.
Further details, including any formal charges and the next stage of the investigation, had not been publicly announced in the reports available at the time of publication.
Because the allegation involves a five-year-old child, Stone Reporters News is withholding the child's name despite some earlier reports publishing identifying information.
The suspect, Ebikeme Seiye, remains accused at this stage. The allegation against him and his reported statement during preliminary questioning remain subject to police investigation and any subsequent judicial proceedings.
