The Sokoto State Police Command has foiled an attempted bandit attack on Tsabre community in Isa Local Government Area, recovering two rocket launchers and other items abandoned by the fleeing attackers following a fierce gun battle, in the latest in a series of police operations against armed groups in Nigeria's North-West.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026, when a large number of armed bandits reportedly stormed the village and opened sporadic gunfire, causing panic among residents. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa'i, disclosed in a statement issued on Friday that the Divisional Police Officer in Isa, upon receiving a distress call, immediately mobilised tactical teams, including operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the Violent Crime Response Unit, to confront the attackers. The police operatives engaged the bandits in a gun battle that lasted for some time, forcing them to retreat into a nearby forest with casualties. "Due to the superior firepower and tactical positioning of the police operatives, the bandits were overpowered and forced to escape into the nearby forest with their casualties," Rufa'i said.
Following the withdrawal of the criminal elements, the police conducted a thorough search of the surrounding bushes and recovered two rocket launchers, two empty AK-47 magazines, a keypad Tecno handset without a battery, a torchlight, an Army jungle hat, a sweater cap, five pairs of sandals and a rain jacket. The recovery of two rocket launchers is significant, as such weapons are rarely encountered in the hands of bandit groups operating in Nigeria's North-West, suggesting an escalation in the firepower available to criminal networks in the region.
The Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, commended the officers for their swift response and gallantry during the operation. He reaffirmed the command's commitment to protecting lives and property across Sokoto State and urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the police. The Commissioner also appealed to members of the public to report anyone with suspected gunshot wounds seeking medical attention to the nearest police station, as the command continues efforts to track down the fleeing bandits.
The attack on Tsabre community is the latest in a series of bandit incidents in Sokoto State, which has emerged as one of the epicentres of banditry in Nigeria's North-West. Isa Local Government Area, where the attack occurred, has been a flashpoint for bandit activity for years. In December 2025, security operatives killed Kachalla Na'Allah, a notorious bandit leader, during an ambush between Girnashe and Kuka Tara villages in Tsabre Ward. The area has also been the site of attacks attributed to Bello Turji, one of Nigeria's most wanted bandit kingpins, who has claimed responsibility for attacks on security operatives in Isa.
The broader security context in Sokoto State remains dire. In August 2026, bandits abducted 150 persons in a fresh attack, while in September, the District Head of Gatawa in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Isa Bawa, was killed in captivity after three weeks. The recurring violence has prompted Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu to call for stronger collaboration between the federal and state governments to tackle banditry and other forms of criminality. The governor has also sought the establishment of a military barracks in Illela and a Police Mobile Barracks at Tara Village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area as part of efforts to strengthen security presence in vulnerable communities. Senator Ibrahim Gobir, representing Sokoto East, has backed a full-scale security offensive against bandits and other criminal networks operating in the region, declaring that "terrorists and bandits must not be allowed to dictate the future of our communities or hold innocent citizens hostage through fear and violence".
The attack on Tsabre occurred just hours after another bandit attack on the Shinkafi–Isa road, where gunmen opened fire on a vehicle, killing Jamilu Isah Modawa, who was travelling from Abuja to Sokoto State to attend his father's burial. The proximity of the two incidents underscores the density of bandit activity in the Isa-Shinkafi axis and the challenges facing security agencies in securing the vast rural expanses of Sokoto State.
The police operation in Isa reflects the command's stated commitment to proactive engagement with bandit groups, but it also highlights the limits of a purely reactive approach. The bandits were able to approach the community, open fire and engage the police before retreating into the forest, where they remain at large. The recovery of two rocket launchers suggests that the bandits possessed significant firepower, and the fact that they were able to escape with their casualties means the command's success was tactical rather than decisive. The Commissioner's appeal for residents to report anyone with gunshot wounds seeking medical attention is a standard investigative measure, but it places responsibility on communities that may fear reprisals from bandit networks.
For the residents of Tsabre community, the attack represents a terrifying night that could have ended in tragedy. The police response, swift and effective as it was, prevented what could have been a mass abduction or killing. For the police command, the operation is a success to be built upon, but the broader challenge of banditry in Sokoto State remains unresolved. As Governor Aliyu has acknowledged, the fight against banditry requires sustained collaboration between federal and state authorities, adequate resources for security agencies and the cooperation of communities that are often caught between armed groups and the state. The coming weeks will determine whether the foiled attack in Isa becomes a turning point in the security situation in Sokoto East, or another incident in a cycle of violence that has claimed countless lives and displaced thousands across Nigeria's North-West.
