Elon Musk Calls Instagram "for Girls" in Reply to User

Elon Musk has reignited a long-running online debate after declaring "Instagram is for girls" in a brief reply on X, the social media platform he owns, drawing thousands of reactions and reopening a familiar argument about gender stereotypes and platform identity just days after he returned from an extended absence that had fuelled speculation about his health and leadership.

The comment was posted on Wednesday, October 1, 2026, in response to a post by venture capital firm Geiger Capital, which announced it had deleted Instagram and described the platform as an "inherently female app" with "zero benefit." Musk replied with five words: "Instagram is for girls." The exchange quickly went viral, attracting thousands of responses within hours and becoming one of the most discussed topics on X. The remark echoed a similar comment Musk made in May 2026, when he joined a viral discussion about social media habits and online trends, writing "Lmao. Instagram is for girls" and mocking men who share their Instagram profiles with him. He later added that when grown men send him their profiles, he wonders if they are "transitioning or what." Those earlier comments also drew criticism from users who described them as sexist and offensive.

The reaction to Musk's latest post was sharply divided. Some users echoed his sentiment, joking that "X is for the boys," while others pushed back, arguing that Instagram is inclusive and widely used across all genders. "I don't agree. I think Instagram is a welcoming space for all genders," one user wrote. Another said simply, "Instagram is for everyone." Several users turned Musk's comment back on him, asking "x is for who?" and "What about X?" One user pointed out that Musk himself has an Instagram account, a claim that reflects the fact that while Musk deleted his personal Instagram account in 2018, he had more than eight million followers at the time and the platform has since been central to his public profile through Tesla and SpaceX. The divided response mirrored the reaction to his May comments, with supporters dismissing the controversy as overblown internet banter and critics accusing Musk of reinforcing outdated stereotypes about who uses which social media platform.

The statistical picture suggests the reality is more nuanced than Musk's comment implies. Instagram's global audience is close to evenly split between men and women, with figures based on Meta's advertising audience data compiled by research firms including DataReportal putting the split at roughly 52.7 per cent male and 47.3 per cent female. Hootsuite reports that 55 per cent of United States Instagram users are female while 44 per cent are male, but notes that the platform's gender distribution is nearly 50/50 globally. India, one of Instagram's largest markets, skews heavily male at 67.2 per cent male and 32.8 per cent female. The picture that emerges is of a platform whose gender composition varies significantly by region, undermining the categorical framing of Musk's remark. Instagram remains one of the world's largest social media platforms, with more than two billion monthly active users, and its user base spans all demographics, including a substantial male population that uses the platform for business, networking and content creation.

The exchange is the latest chapter in Musk's long-running rivalry with Meta, the parent company of Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. The friction between Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg intensified in July 2023 when Meta launched Threads, a text-based platform developed by the Instagram team, which was positioned as a direct competitor to X. The two executives have exchanged criticism for years, and their rivalry has occasionally veered into the personal, including a proposed cage fight that never materialised. Musk has frequently used X to comment on rival platforms, and his criticism of Instagram dates back to at least 2018, when he deleted his personal account and later told Joe Rogan that the platform leads to "unhappiness." In 2023, he doubled down on his criticism, calling Instagram a "thirst trap." His latest remark, however, focused specifically on the perceived gender identity of the platform's user base, prompting a wider discussion about stereotypes surrounding social media use and whether platforms should be defined by the demographics of their users.

The timing of the comment is notable. It came just two days after Musk returned to public life following an extended period of speculation about his health and the direction of his companies, during which he faced questions about his leadership and the performance of X. The remark also coincided with a period of intense political activity in the United States and globally, and some observers noted that Musk's social media posts have increasingly served as a barometer of his political engagement and cultural commentary. For a figure whose platforms reach hundreds of millions of people, Musk's offhand comments carry significant weight, shaping conversations that extend far beyond the digital sphere.

For Meta, the controversy is unlikely to have a material impact on Instagram's operations or user numbers, which have remained robust despite years of criticism and competition. For Musk, the episode is another reminder that his personal remarks are inseparable from the platforms he controls, and that a five-word post can generate as much attention as a corporate announcement. For users caught in the crossfire, the debate raises a question that extends beyond Instagram: whether social media platforms should be defined by the demographics of their users, or whether their value lies precisely in their ability to connect people across those divides. As the reactions continue to circulate on X, one user's response perhaps captured the moment best: "Instagram is for everyone." Whether Musk agrees is another matter entirely.
