The Delta State Police Command has rescued a 25-year-old woman who was allegedly assaulted and held hostage in Usiefrun community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The rescue operation was carried out on Saturday, October 3, 2026, following credible intelligence received by the police, according to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, and reported by multiple Nigerian news outlets.
Edafe said the Divisional Police Officer of Otu-Jeremi Division, acting on intelligence shared by the DPO of Ovwian-Aladja Division, mobilised police operatives to Usiefrun at about 8:30 a.m.
The operatives reportedly found the woman at the location and rescued her from the situation.
Police arrested a 29-year-old man identified as Brotugbare Francis Onome in connection with the incident. The command described him as the main suspect in the case.
The police said the premises were subsequently searched and items were recovered. The command said the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and hostage situation was ongoing.
The latest development formed part of a series of operations announced by the Delta State Police Command involving alleged kidnapping-related offences and cult-related violence.
In another operation, police in Abraka arrested two men, identified as 37-year-old Endurance Akpade and 43-year-old Edwin Friday Morgan, over an alleged conspiracy to kidnap a woman in the area.
According to Edafe, the arrests followed intelligence received by the Abraka Division on October 1, 2026. The operation was conducted with assistance from members of civilian anti-cult operatives, and the suspects were taken into police custody to assist with the investigation.
Police also announced the arrest of two other men in Oghara in connection with the investigation into the alleged cult-related killing of a 25-year-old man identified as Godfrey.
The victim was reportedly killed at Jesse Main Market in Ethiope West Local Government Area on March 24, 2026.
The two suspects arrested in connection with that investigation were identified as 23-year-old Ezekiel Sunday Izomor and 23-year-old Emmanuel Ogaganefe. Police said the arrests followed intelligence obtained from a video that had circulated online.
The command said investigations suggested that two other suspects, identified as Collins and Richman, were allegedly connected to the killing and remained at large.
Police said the investigation was continuing and that efforts were underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.
The Delta State Police Command said the various operations also resulted in the recovery of several items in the separate cases.
The command's latest announcement reflects its continuing emphasis on intelligence-led operations against kidnapping, cultism and other violent crimes across the state.
Commissioner of Police Samuel Erale commended the officers involved in the operations, particularly for what the command described as effective intelligence gathering and rapid response.
Eralе also urged members of the public to provide credible and timely information to the police to assist investigations and prevent crime.
The Commissioner further appealed to young people to stay away from cultism, warning that involvement in cult activities could have serious consequences for their future.
The rescue of the 25-year-old woman is the most immediate development in the series of operations because police said she was found alive and was rescued from the location in Usiefrun.
However, the command has not publicly disclosed further details about the relationship between the woman and the arrested suspect, the circumstances that led to her being held, or the duration of the alleged hostage situation.
Police have also not announced any charges against the suspect at this stage. The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against him have not been determined by a court.
The Delta Police Command's announcement comes as security agencies across the state continue to target kidnapping networks, alleged cult groups and other violent-crime suspects.
For the Usiefrun case specifically, the key development remains the successful rescue of the woman and the arrest of the 29-year-old suspect following intelligence received by the police.
Further details are expected as investigators continue their work and establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and hostage incident.
