At least three people were killed after protests triggered by the alleged shooting of a young man by a local vigilante member escalated into violence in Minna, Niger State, on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
The incident began at about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, when local vigilantes reportedly mobilised to Kpakungu to apprehend suspected miscreants. According to the Niger State Police Command, one of the vigilantes allegedly shot and killed a man identified as Aliyu during the operation.
The shooting reportedly sparked protests in the area, with youths demanding justice over Aliyu's death.
The situation escalated in the early hours of Sunday when youths blocked the Minna-Bida Road in protest. The protesters subsequently moved towards the Gbeganu area, where police said residents were attacked.
Two additional deaths were reported during the ensuing violence, bringing the reported number of fatalities to three. Local reports said the two victims were subsequently buried according to local customs, although details surrounding their deaths remained unclear.
The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident and said tactical teams had been deployed to the affected areas.
According to Abiodun, police patrol teams were initially mobilised to restore order following the shooting and subsequent protest. He said officers later dispersed the rioters after the situation deteriorated, while the Minna-Bida Road was cleared to restore the movement of traffic.
The police spokesperson said efforts were underway to arrest the vigilante member allegedly responsible for Aliyu's death, as well as other individuals suspected of involvement in the subsequent violence.
The incident reportedly caused disruption along the busy highway, leaving motorists and other road users stranded as the protest blocked the route. Reports also indicated that businesses and other activities in parts of the affected areas were disrupted during the unrest.
The circumstances surrounding the two additional deaths remain less clear than the initial shooting. Police confirmed that two people died after youths moved into Gbeganu and attacked residents, but further details about the identities of the victims and the circumstances of their deaths were not immediately provided.
The development has heightened concerns among residents about security and the potential for local disputes to escalate rapidly into wider violence.
Police have urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding while investigations continue. The command said security personnel remained deployed in the affected communities to prevent further escalation and maintain order.
The reported violence comes amid heightened security concerns in Minna following other recent incidents that have generated public attention. However, those incidents are separate from Sunday's clash and should not be conflated with the current investigation.
As of Monday, October 5, police had not announced arrests in connection with the alleged shooting or the subsequent deaths. The command also had not publicly released further details about the investigation.
The latest account therefore establishes that one man, Aliyu, was allegedly shot dead during a vigilante operation on Saturday night, protests followed, youths blocked the Minna-Bida Road on Sunday and violence in the Gbeganu area subsequently resulted in two further deaths.
The Niger State Police Command said normalcy had been restored and traffic resumed along the affected road, while investigations and efforts to apprehend those allegedly responsible remained ongoing.
