One Dead After Bus Loses Control, Somersaults And Catches Fire In Kwara

One person has been confirmed dead after a commercial bus carrying 21 passengers crashed and caught fire along the Oko-Olowo Expressway in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The accident occurred at about 6:35 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at Iye-Maja Junction along the Oko-Olowo highway.

The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, October 5, through its spokesman, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle.

According to the fire service, the commercial bus suffered a tyre blowout, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

The bus reportedly somersaulted before catching fire.

Emergency responders evacuated the passengers from the vehicle, while those who sustained injuries were taken to hospital for medical attention.

The fire service said one person was confirmed dead in the crash.

The statement did not immediately provide the identity of the deceased or the exact number of passengers who sustained injuries.

The incident adds to a series of road crashes recorded on Nigerian highways, particularly during periods of increased movement, highlighting the dangers associated with vehicle and road safety.
