A family in Yobe State has been thrown into mourning following the deaths of twin sisters, Dr Hadiya Usman Abdullahi, a medical doctor, and Dr Aidah Usman Abdullahi, a Doctor of Pharmacy, two days apart.
The sisters were daughters of Dr Hadiza Usman, the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Nguru, Yobe State.
Reports circulating on Monday, October 5, 2026, said Hadiya died on Friday after reportedly spending about a week at FMC Nguru, where she was receiving treatment for a sickle cell crisis. She was subsequently buried after funeral prayers at the Emir’s Palace.
Her twin sister, Aidah, was reportedly receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital around the same period. She was said to have recovered and was discharged.
According to accounts cited by local reports, Aidah later visited her sister’s grave after her discharge but subsequently collapsed. She was rushed to a hospital, where she later died on Sunday, two days after Hadiya’s death.
The Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, also reportedly confirmed Aidah’s death in a condolence message, referring to her as the “second twin.”
The deaths have generated an outpouring of grief among members of the medical and pharmaceutical communities, as well as relatives, friends and associates of the family.
Hadiya was described as a medical doctor who worked as a Medical Officer in the Haematology Department of FMC Nguru, while Aidah was a Doctor of Pharmacy.
Their deaths within a 48-hour period have particularly affected their mother, colleagues and other members of the family, with condolence messages describing the development as a painful double loss.
The circumstances surrounding Aidah’s death have not been fully established in the available reports. While some accounts say she collapsed after visiting her twin sister’s grave, they do not independently establish the medical cause of her death.
Similarly, the sickle cell crisis reported in connection with Hadiya’s hospitalisation has been attributed to reports surrounding the family’s loss, rather than to a detailed public medical statement from the hospital.
The deaths have nevertheless left colleagues mourning the loss of two healthcare professionals from the same family within an exceptionally short period.
The sisters have been remembered in condolence messages as healthcare professionals who contributed to their respective fields, with mourners praying for the repose of their souls and strength for their bereaved family.
The development is also a personal loss for the leadership of FMC Nguru, where their mother serves as Medical Director.
As condolences continue to reach the family, colleagues and friends have expressed sympathy over the loss of the twin sisters and prayed for the family to find strength during the difficult period.
