The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation into officers attached to the Makinde Divisional Headquarters after a video surfaced showing them allegedly demanding and collecting money from a dispatch rider.

The incident came to public attention on Monday, October 5, 2026, after footage of the encounter circulated on social media, prompting the police command to launch an investigation.

According to the report accompanying the video, the dispatch rider allegedly paid ₦20,000 to the officers during the encounter. The rider was reportedly recording the interaction with a hidden camera without the officers’ knowledge.

The footage reportedly showed one of the officers removing the key from the dispatch rider’s motorcycle during the stop.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the officers seen in the footage are personnel attached to the Makinde Division and said they had been directed to report to the command headquarters for questioning.

In a statement issued on Monday, the command said the officers were being interviewed as part of an ongoing investigation into the allegations.

“The Lagos State Police Command is aware of the video and has commenced an investigation into the incident,” the command said.

The command said the investigation was being conducted in line with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai.

“The officers involved have reported at the Command Headquarters and are currently being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation,” the statement added.

The dispatch rider, whose identity was not disclosed in the police statement, reportedly alleged that the officers extorted ₦20,000 from him.

However, the command did not independently confirm that the money was collected by the officers or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged payment.

The police said the investigation would establish what happened and determine the appropriate action if any of the officers are found culpable.

“The Command assures the public that the investigation is ongoing and appropriate action will be taken based on its findings,” the statement said.

As of Monday, the command had not announced the arrest, suspension or disciplinary sanction of any of the officers involved.

The incident comes amid continuing public concerns over allegations of police extortion and misconduct during stop-and-search operations in Lagos.

A similar allegation was recently made by a Lagos resident, Nasir Ahmed, who accused three policemen of extorting him after allegedly stopping his vehicle on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway. He reportedly said the officers accused him of driving against traffic and that he had to seek financial assistance from friends during the encounter.

The latest case has again drawn attention to the conduct of police officers during roadside checks and interactions with commercial and dispatch riders in Lagos.

For now, the allegation against the Makinde Division officers remains under investigation. The police command has said its findings will determine whether any officer is found to have committed an offence and what action should follow.
