The Gombe State Police Command has launched an investigation into allegations that a police inspector, Ibrahim Musa, was assaulted by an Area Commander, ACP Alex Gwaza.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed the investigation in a telephone interview, saying the Commissioner of Police had directed the Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a full and transparent inquiry into the incident.
According to the police spokesperson, the command became aware of the allegations after conflicting accounts emerged from the inspector and the Area Commander regarding what transpired.
Musa reportedly alleged that he was assaulted after being detained for two days over an alleged act of disobedience to an official directive issued by Gwaza.
The police, however, said the circumstances surrounding the incident had not been established, stressing that the investigation was necessary because the two officers had presented different versions of events.
Abdullahi said the inspector was alleged to have disobeyed an order issued by the Area Commander, but noted that any disciplinary action against a police officer must be carried out in accordance with due process.
He declined to comment further on the specific allegations against Gwaza, saying doing so could interfere with the ongoing investigation.
The police spokesperson identified the officers involved as Inspector Ibrahim Musa and ACP Alex Gwaza and assured that the circumstances of the incident would be established through the investigation.
The command said the CID was expected to provide further details once the investigation progresses.
The allegation has not been established against the Area Commander, and no disciplinary finding has been announced by the police. The parties involved are expected to have the opportunity to present their respective accounts as the investigation continues.
