The Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take urgent steps to reduce the cost of living, particularly the prices of fuel and food in the country.
The chairman of the association in the state, Most Rev. Dr Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, made the appeal during an interdenominational service organised in Minna to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Yohanna, who is also the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, said the Federal Government needed to intensify efforts to stabilise the economy and translate its reforms into tangible relief for ordinary Nigerians.
He said Nigerians were looking forward to a significant reduction in fuel and food prices, lower inflation, a stronger naira and an increase in the country’s external reserves.
The CAN chairman also called on the government to strengthen the security of lives and property, particularly in communities affected by insecurity.
According to him, national policies should result in practical improvements in the lives of citizens through job creation, infrastructure development and lower living costs.
He acknowledged the economic difficulties confronting the country but urged Nigerians not to lose hope, saying the challenges could be overcome through purposeful action.
Yohanna said prayers for the country should be accompanied by action from citizens and leaders, stressing the need for Nigerians to contribute positively to national development.
His appeal comes amid renewed pressure over the rising cost of petrol and its impact on household expenses and transportation. Recent reports have indicated that higher global oil prices have contributed to renewed increases in petrol prices in Nigeria, adding pressure to the cost of living.
The cleric also addressed the forthcoming 2027 elections, urging Christian leaders to maintain their non-partisan position and cautioning against turning churches and Christian gatherings into platforms for political campaigns.
He said religious leaders should promote peace and encourage responsible participation in the democratic process.
Representing Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago at the service, Permanent Secretary Jonathan Wasa urged residents to continue praying for Nigeria and its leaders.
Wasa also called on residents to remain hopeful despite the challenges facing the country, expressing optimism about the future of Niger State and Nigeria.
The Niger State CAN chairman's appeal adds to calls from organised groups and other stakeholders for government policies to translate into measurable improvements in household welfare as the country continues to deal with economic pressures.
CAN at the national level has similarly urged the Federal Government to make lower food, transportation and energy costs a measurable priority, saying Nigerians who have endured prolonged economic pressure deserve meaningful relief.
For the Niger State chapter, Yohanna said economic stability must ultimately be reflected in the daily experiences of ordinary Nigerians, including their ability to afford essential goods and services.
