Five suspects have been arraigned before the Ota Magistrate Court in Ogun State over their alleged involvement in an attack on police officers during which a suspect in custody reportedly escaped.
The suspects were arraigned on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, following an incident that occurred around The Bells area of Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, on October 2.
According to the Ogun State Police Command, trouble started after a police patrol team intercepted and arrested a suspect allegedly found in possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
The command said the officers were taking the handcuffed suspect to the police station when they were allegedly ambushed by a group of people.
The attackers allegedly assaulted the officers, damaged the police operational vehicle and facilitated the escape of the suspect who was being conveyed to the station.
The police subsequently launched an intelligence-led operation which resulted in the arrest of five suspects identified as Morenikeji Badmus, 36; Adedoja Segun, 40; Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49; Mike Stephen, 28; and David Odeh, 32.
The suspects were arraigned on allegations bordering on conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The police said investigations were continuing and efforts were underway to apprehend other people allegedly involved in the incident.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, reiterated the command’s position that the safety of officers performing lawful duties remained a priority.
He also urged members of the public to avoid physical confrontation with law enforcement personnel and instead use established legal channels to address grievances.
The police have not disclosed whether the escaped suspect has been rearrested or provided further details on the outcome of the suspects’ first court appearance. The allegations against the five defendants remain to be determined by the court.
