Two serving police officers and a dismissed police sergeant have been arrested in Abuja over alleged extortion after 15 drivers’ licences belonging to members of the public were recovered from them.
The suspects were arrested on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, following a distress call reporting alleged extortion by police officers at Transcorp Junction in the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to a situation report from the Maitama Police Division, the distress call was received at about 2:50pm, after complaints that some police officers were allegedly extorting motorists and other members of the public.
A team led by the Divisional Crime Officer was subsequently deployed to the area, where three suspects were arrested.
They were identified as ASP Michael Godwin, attached to Force Transport, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Inspector Demeka’a Yarkwan, attached to Wuse Division; and Sergeant William Udokang, a dismissed police officer.
Police said 15 drivers’ licences belonging to different individuals were recovered from the suspects.
Investigators have since begun contacting some of the licence owners and their relatives to establish how the documents came into the possession of the three men.
Preliminary findings reportedly indicated that some motorists had their licences seized and were subsequently allegedly compelled to make payments ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦183,000.
The police are also working to identify and locate all the owners of the recovered licences as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the alleged transactions.
The arrests come amid renewed disciplinary action by police authorities against personnel accused of extortion and other forms of misconduct. In a separate case in July, the FCT Police Command commenced orderly-room proceedings against four officers accused of unauthorised traffic enforcement and alleged extortion of a motorist in Maitama.
However, the latest case remains under investigation, and there has been no court determination of the allegations against ASP Godwin, Inspector Yarkwan or Sergeant Udokang.
The Maitama Division has reportedly submitted its situation report to superior authorities for further directives and necessary action.
