The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the death of a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, who was found dead in a hotel room in Ekpoma.
Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died on October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
According to the police, Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob. The woman reportedly left the room after the lecturer asked her to purchase water.
When she returned, she reportedly found Uwuigbe unresponsive in the room.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem confirmed that the hotel owner, the manager and the woman who was with the deceased had been arrested and were assisting investigators.
The command said Uwuigbe’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
The police have not disclosed the cause of death or established that the encounter with the woman caused his death. Investigators are still working to determine what happened before the lecturer was found dead.
Ambrose Alli University also confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff. The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the incident occurred outside the institution’s premises and that the woman involved was not a student of the university.
The three people arrested remain under investigation as the police work to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
