Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has commended security agencies for the successful rescue of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted along the Onitsha–Owerri Road.

The governor, in a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, praised the security agencies for what he described as their swift, discreet and collaborative response that secured the safe release of the victims.

The 20 prospective corps members were abducted on October 1 while travelling towards their NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states. They were reportedly intercepted along the Owerri–Onitsha route in Imo State.

The Nigeria Police Force later confirmed that the victims were rescued on October 7 at Amakohia-Ubi in Imo State following sustained search-and-rescue operations involving the police and other security agencies. They were subsequently taken for medical assessment and necessary care.

Uzodimma said the sensitive nature of the incident required authorities to limit information released to the public while the operation was ongoing, stressing that the priority was to secure the safe return of the abducted persons.

He expressed particular appreciation to the security agencies for maintaining a coordinated approach throughout the operation and also commended the collaboration between the Imo and Oyo State governments.

The governor also praised the parents and families of the prospective corps members for their patience and fortitude during the period of uncertainty.

The rescue has brought relief to the families of the victims, who had raised concerns over their safety following the abduction.

The police have said investigations and operations are continuing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the abduction. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether any suspect has been arrested or whether ransom was paid before the victims were released.

Uzodimma urged Nigerians to continue to support efforts by the Federal Government and security agencies to address the country’s security challenges.
