A woman has reportedly been arrested by the police in Jato-Aka, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, following the alleged death of her brother’s young daughter during an incident involving corporal punishment.
The incident reportedly occurred around Baaki, near Hope Academy Nursery, Primary and Secondary School, in Jato-Aka.
According to a local report published on October 6, 2026, the woman allegedly accused her brother’s children of stealing ₦500 before subjecting them to punishment. The report claimed that the girl subsequently died.
It also alleged that the woman’s brother had two children involved in the incident, with the male child surviving and reportedly sustaining an injury.
The report further claimed that neighbours became aware of the situation and intervened, after which the police were alerted and the woman was taken into custody.
However, the detailed circumstances surrounding the child’s death, including the exact cause of death, have not been independently established from an official police statement.
The identity of the arrested woman has also not been publicly disclosed.
The incident has reportedly generated concern in the Jato-Aka community, with calls for a thorough investigation and appropriate legal action if the allegations are established.
