Political reconciliation efforts in Rivers State have entered another phase following a closed-door meeting between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and leaders and supporters of their respective political camps.

The meeting, held at Fubara’s private residence in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, also had the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Rivers State, Kingsley Chinda, former Senator Magnus Abe and other political stakeholders in attendance. The meeting reportedly lasted about four hours.

Wike and Chinda arrived at the governor’s residence with their supporters at about 4pm, with the discussions ending around 8pm. However, none of the participants addressed journalists afterwards, and details of the issues discussed were not publicly disclosed.

The meeting is coming against the backdrop of renewed efforts to bring together political actors who were previously divided by the prolonged crisis between Wike and Fubara.

Fubara has in recent months moved closer to the political arrangement around Wike and the Rainbow Coalition. In July, the governor publicly declared support for the coalition, President Bola Tinubu and Chinda ahead of the 2027 elections.

The latest meeting has consequently generated fresh political discussion over the structure and future of the Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State, particularly its relationship with the formal APC structure.

Reports have described the engagement as part of efforts to consolidate reconciliation and establish a common political front ahead of the 2027 elections. Punch reported that sources viewed the meeting as part of Wike’s fence-mending efforts ahead of the coalition’s campaign.

The development also comes amid continuing debate within APC circles about political structures operating alongside the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wike has maintained that the Rainbow Coalition is principally focused on mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election. The minister has previously rejected suggestions that the coalition was established to undermine the APC.

Meanwhile, Chinda remains the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State. Recent reports continue to identify him in that capacity, and there is currently no verified information indicating that he has been disqualified or that the APC has moved to replace him.

The meeting therefore represents another significant development in Rivers State politics as the different political camps attempt to consolidate their positions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While some political commentators have interpreted the reconciliation efforts as part of Wike’s broader attempt to strengthen his political influence in Rivers State and beyond, such interpretations remain political analysis and should not be presented as established fact.

For now, the immediate outcome of the meeting remains unclear, as Wike, Fubara, Chinda and the other participants have not publicly disclosed what was agreed.

The political realignment in Rivers State is expected to remain a major issue as the 2027 elections approach, particularly as the Rainbow Coalition continues to bring together politicians and supporters from different political backgrounds.
