Residents of Bindin and neighbouring communities in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State have protested the reported withdrawal of military personnel from the area, with demonstrators blocking an Army convoy in an attempt to prevent troops from leaving.
The protest reportedly took place on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, following a series of deadly attacks in Bindin and nearby Gobirawar Chali communities.
Thousands of residents, including women dressed in hijabs, reportedly took to the streets as the military convoy prepared to leave the area.
The protesters said the continued presence of soldiers was crucial to the safety of residents, particularly following the recent attacks and the displacement of people from affected communities.
Residents reportedly appealed to the Federal Government and security authorities to reconsider any decision to withdraw troops, expressing fears that their departure could leave the communities exposed to further attacks.
The development follows reports of a deadly attack in Bindin earlier this week. While different accounts have circulated regarding the number of casualties, the military has not independently confirmed the figures.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Zamfara, Yazid Abubakar, confirmed that an incident occurred in Bindin but referred detailed questions to Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which has operational responsibility for the area.
The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division/Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant-Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, said military operations were ongoing and declined to confirm reported casualty figures until the operation was concluded.
Reports from the affected communities said the recent violence had forced thousands of residents to flee their homes in search of safer locations.
The protesters therefore urged the authorities to maintain adequate security personnel in the area while intensifying efforts to protect communities affected by bandit attacks.
They also called for urgent assistance for displaced residents who have reportedly been forced to abandon their homes and belongings.
The latest protest highlights the security dilemma facing communities in parts of Zamfara, where residents continue to depend on military deployments for protection while security agencies conduct operations against armed groups.
Earlier operations in Maru and other parts of Zamfara have seen troops rescue abducted residents and travellers and foil further abduction attempts. In September, troops rescued 41 travellers who had been abducted after their commercial bus broke down along the Tsafe-Funtua Road.
For the affected residents of Bindin, however, the immediate concern remains the reported withdrawal of troops and what they fear could be a security vacuum in the area.
