The Nigerian Navy has uncovered approximately 40,000 litres of a substance suspected to be crude oil in the Oteghele area of Delta State.
The discovery was made on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship Delta during an intelligence-led operation targeting suspected crude oil theft and related illicit activities within its area of operations.
According to the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the suspected crude oil was stored in a large dugout reservoir.
The Navy said the recovered substance and the reservoir were subsequently handled in accordance with established procedures.
The latest discovery follows another operation in the same Oteghele area on September 21, when NNS Delta uncovered about 30,000 litres of substance suspected to be crude oil.
The Navy said the repeated discoveries demonstrate its continued efforts to disrupt illicit crude oil storage activities and deny criminal operators access to the nation’s petroleum resources.
Folorunsho said the Navy would continue to sustain intelligence-led operations across its area of operations to combat crude oil theft and protect Nigeria’s critical petroleum resources.
The Navy did not announce any arrest in connection with the latest 40,000-litre discovery.
