Dr Sokonte Davies, a former political ally of former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, has dumped the African Democratic Congress and returned to the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 elections.
Davies, a former Rivers State governorship aspirant and founding member of the ADC, announced his decision on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, in a statement titled “Return to the Progressive Family: My Decision to Rejoin the All Progressives Congress.”
He said the decision followed extensive consultations with his family, political associates, constituents and elders, as well as a personal assessment of where he could best contribute to the interests of his people and the development of Rivers State.
Davies said his return to the APC was informed by what he described as “deep reflection, patriotic conviction, and a clear-eyed assessment” of the political platform through which he could serve his constituents.
“For me, this is a homecoming,” he said, describing the APC as a platform suitable for progressive governance, national unity and grassroots development.
The former ADC chieftain recalled that he was a foundational member of the APC and said he remained committed to what he described as the party’s founding ideals, including democracy, social justice, true federalism, inclusive growth and respect for the rule of law.
He also thanked the ADC leadership and members for the opportunity to serve during his time in the party, saying he bore no ill will towards them.
“Politics is a marketplace of ideas; we can disagree without being disagreeable,” Davies said.
He pledged to work with APC members and stakeholders at the ward, local government, state and national levels, while urging his supporters and associates to remain calm, law-abiding and focused.
Davies also expressed appreciation to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whom he described as giving him a “very warm and excited friendly reception.”
He further thanked APC National Vice Chairman, Chief Victor Giadom, for facilitating his return to the party, as well as party elders and members for their acceptance.
The development comes amid intense political realignment in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections, with politicians and political blocs repositioning across the APC, ADC and other platforms.
Davies had contested the ADC governorship primary in Rivers State but did not secure the party’s ticket. On October 7, the Rivers ADC criticised his reported alignment with the Wike-led Rainbow Coalition, saying his departure would not affect its preparations for the 2027 election.
Davies has now formally declared his return to the APC, pledging to deploy his experience, networks and goodwill towards strengthening the party and supporting its political agenda in Rivers State.
