The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a nine-year-old boy over the alleged setting of a family house ablaze in Rugan Badali, Karasuwa Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of four members of his family.

The victims were identified as the boy’s two stepmothers and two younger brothers, who were inside the house when the fire occurred on August 21, 2026.

According to the police, the incident was initially reported as a fire outbreak at the residence of one Abubakar Idi. Following the report, the Commissioner of Police directed the Violent Crime Response Unit to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation allegedly revealed that the fire was deliberately started by Idi’s nine-year-old son.

Police spokesperson ASP Yusuf Adamu-Ali said the child allegedly admitted to setting the house on fire after his father beat him over the alleged theft of a chicken.

The police said the boy allegedly obtained matches the following day and set the house ablaze while his two stepmothers and two younger brothers were asleep.

The child reportedly confessed to the act several days after the incident and was subsequently arrested by the police.

The command said the investigation had reached its concluding stage and that the child would be presented before the appropriate authorities for necessary legal proceedings in accordance with applicable laws governing children in conflict with the law.

The Commissioner of Police commended the officers involved in the investigation and directed that all necessary legal and child-protection procedures be observed.

The command also condoled with the bereaved family and urged parents and guardians to pay close attention to the welfare and behaviour of children.
