Three people, including two security operatives and a foreign national, have been killed after suspected Lakurawa fighters attacked a construction site along the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The attack occurred on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at a construction site in Gubba Village, Andarai District of Maiyama LGA.
The spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, Superintendent Bashir Usman, confirmed the incident, saying the attackers were suspected to have infiltrated the area from the Kebbe axis of neighbouring Sokoto State.
According to the police, the gunmen attacked the workers at the road project, killing two security personnel who were providing protection for the foreign national and other workers at the site.
Two civilians also sustained gunshot injuries and were evacuated for medical treatment.
Usman said joint security forces responded to the attack, with tactical teams deployed to the affected areas to prevent further attacks.
He added that another attack by the suspected Lakurawa fighters along the Birnin Malam axis was repelled by police teams on the same day.
The police spokesperson further said military personnel neutralised scores of the suspected attackers during subsequent operations, while several motorcycles were recovered.
Following the attack, construction activities at the affected section of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway were suspended as security agencies intensified surveillance and deployed additional personnel to the area.
The police assured workers and contractors on the project of continued protection and urged residents to remain calm as security operations continue.
The Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway is a major federal road project designed to connect Sokoto in the North-West with Badagry in Lagos through several states, including Kebbi.
