Troops of Sector 2, Joint Task Force North West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have repelled a coordinated attack by suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group on a Forward Operating Base in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing some of the attackers and recovering weapons and motorcycles in what military sources described as a decisive engagement that prevented the base from being overrun.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 7, 2026, when a large number of terrorists, reportedly numbering about 100 and operating on more than 100 motorcycles, attempted to storm the Forward Operating Base Maiyama. According to an operational report made available to newsmen on Thursday, the troops of 8 Division Strike Force Battalion at the base came under attack from the terrorists, who were armed with sophisticated weapons. The troops fought back and were reinforced by Forward Operating Bases Kwarikwasa and Koko, as well as the 1 Battalion Quick Reaction Force. The combined forces engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat with gunshot wounds and abandon one AK-47 rifle, 120 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, one magazine and 17 motorcycles.

The operation formed part of a broader series of engagements conducted between October 6 and 7, in which troops of the Nigerian Army rescued 87 civilians in separate operations and repelled terrorist attacks across Kebbi, Niger and Kogi states. The rescued civilians were handed over to relevant authorities after receiving medical attention, according to the report. The successful defence of the Maiyama base and the recovery of the attackers' weapons and motorcycles represent a significant setback for the Lakurawa group, which has been responsible for a string of deadly attacks on military installations, communities and travellers in Nigeria's North-West.

The Lakurawa terrorist group, which emerged in the North-West, has been linked to a series of attacks in Sokoto and Kebbi states in 2026, including the February ambush on the convoy of the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Major General Bemgha Koughna, near Mayama Hill in Maiyama Local Government Area, in which five terrorists were killed and weapons including PKT and AK-47 rifles were recovered. In March, suspected Lakurawa fighters killed several soldiers in Girinmasa, Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, and in the same month, nine soldiers and a policeman were killed in an ambush at Giro Masa, Shanga Local Government Area. The group has also targeted worshippers, killing six in a mosque attack in Maiyama Local Government Area in February 2026, an attack widely seen as a reprisal for the killing of its fighters by troops.

The attack on the Forward Operating Base in Maiyama underscores the persistent threat posed by Lakurawa to military installations and communities in the North-West, and the operational pressure under which Nigerian troops are serving in the region. Forward Operating Bases are strategically positioned to project force, gather intelligence and respond rapidly to emerging threats, making them prime targets for terrorist groups seeking to degrade military capacity and seize weapons and equipment. The ability of the troops at Maiyama to hold their ground and repel a numerically superior force reflects the training and coordination of the forces deployed under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the joint task force established to combat banditry and terrorism across the North-West.

The political context of the operation is significant. The 2027 general elections are less than four months away, with the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, and the governorship and state assembly elections for February 6. Security has emerged as one of the central issues in the campaign, alongside the cost of living and the economy. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is seeking a second term on the All Progressives Congress platform, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of the Allied Peoples Movement are among the major challengers. The Federal Government has consistently pointed to the expansion of military formations and the operational successes of security agencies as evidence of its commitment to addressing insecurity, while critics argue that attacks on military bases and rural communities continue with alarming frequency.

The broader security picture in Kebbi State remains challenging. On the same day as the attack on the Maiyama base, suspected Lakurawa terrorists killed two soldiers and a Chinese national in an attack on construction workers along the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway project in Maiyama Local Government Area, injuring two other civilians. The police confirmed the incident, with the Police Public Relations Officer in Kebbi State disclosing that scores of the attackers were neutralised by military personnel and several motorcycles were recovered. The State Criminal Investigation Department is investigating the matter. The twin incidents illustrate the multi-front nature of the security crisis in Kebbi State, where terrorists simultaneously target military installations, construction sites and civilian communities. The successful defence of the Forward Operating Base prevented what could have been a far more catastrophic outcome, but the loss of life in the construction site attack is a reminder that the threat remains active and adaptive.

For the people of Maiyama and surrounding communities, the attack is a terrifying reminder of the proximity of the terrorist threat. For the Nigerian Army, the engagement is a validation of the reinforcement strategy and inter-base coordination that underpins Operation FANSAN YAMMA. For the government, the outcome is a measure of success in a broader conflict that will be measured not by individual battles but by whether communities can live without the fear that has become a daily reality in the North-West. As the operation continues and the investigation into the construction site attack proceeds, the coming weeks will determine whether the momentum generated by the defence of the Maiyama base can be sustained and whether the Lakurawa group's capacity to launch coordinated attacks can be permanently degraded.
