The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for approximately 25 days to allow for essential repairs and resurfacing.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 8, 2026, and signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the authority said the proposed closure would commence on October 20, subject to final confirmation.

FAAN explained that the planned intervention became necessary following the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks that have been worsened by recent heavy rainfall.

According to the authority, the rehabilitation will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.

The work is also intended to prepare the airport for increased passenger numbers and flight activity expected during the Christmas travel season.

Beyond the repairs, FAAN disclosed that the project would include extending the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region grows.

The authority said the expansion would improve the airport’s capacity, passenger comfort and overall travel experience.

FAAN advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.

It added that it would continue engaging relevant stakeholders and communicate the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they had been finalised.

The proposed shutdown is expected to affect flight operations at the airport during the rehabilitation period, making it important for travellers to confirm their arrangements with airlines before departure.
