The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested four suspects following a farmers-herders clash in Guda village, Ningi Local Government Area, which left one farmer dead and several houses burnt.
The incident occurred on September 23, 2026, at about 7:40 a.m., according to a statement issued by the police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, on Friday, October 9.
Habib said three farmers from Guda village had gone to their farms on Guda Hill when they discovered cattle belonging to a herder grazing on and destroying their crops.
The farmers reportedly chased the cattle towards the herders’ settlement, where an argument broke out and escalated into a physical confrontation. The three farmers sustained injuries during the clash.
The police said some youths from Guda village subsequently mobilised in retaliation and set fire to houses in the herders’ settlement.
Officers attached to the Ningi Division responded to the incident, restored calm and evacuated the injured to General Hospital, Ningi, for treatment.
One of the injured farmers, identified as 40-year-old Usman Jibrin, later died while receiving medical attention.
The police said four suspects were arrested on October 8 through intelligence-led operations. They are being investigated over alleged criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, arson and culpable homicide.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation.
The command condemned the violence and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands. It urged farming and herding communities to resolve disputes peacefully and cooperate with security agencies.
The incident highlights the recurring tensions between farmers and herders over crop damage, access to farmland and livestock grazing, which have led to violence and destruction of property in parts of the country.
