At least 22 people are feared dead after suspected bandits ambushed traders travelling under the escort of Nigerian Army troops in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday, October 11, 2026, along the Gurusu–Gwashi route as the traders travelled to Gwashi to attend the community’s weekly market.

A resident of the area, identified as Malam Aminu Gwashi, reportedly confirmed the incident, saying several people, including security personnel, were feared killed during the ambush.

He added that many others sustained injuries and were taken to Bukkuyum General Hospital for medical attention.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of residents and traders who depend on military escorts to travel between communities affected by persistent bandit attacks.

Gwashi and Bukkuyum have experienced repeated attacks by armed groups, disrupting commercial activities and making movement along rural routes increasingly dangerous.

Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the military were reportedly unsuccessful. The Information Officer of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, and the Information Officer of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, Major Osoba Olaniyi, were said to have been contacted but did not respond to requests for comment.

As of the time of publication, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Zamfara State Police Command had issued an official statement confirming the reported casualty figure.

The circumstances of the ambush, the identities of those killed and the number of injured victims had yet to be independently confirmed. It was also unclear whether any arrests had been made.
