The Enugu State Government has denied involvement in attacks on members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the party’s state secretariat in Enugu, insisting that no one died in the incidents.

The government’s position followed reports of violence on Saturday, October 10, 2026, when NDC supporters gathered at the airport ahead of the party’s statewide campaign flag-off and were later involved in another incident at the party’s secretariat in the GRA area of Enugu.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, stated the government’s position on Sunday, October 11, while addressing journalists at the Government House in Enugu.

Onyia attributed the airport confrontation to the party’s alleged failure to obtain approval from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) before organising a rally at the facility.

According to him, security agencies had advised the party to obtain the necessary authorisation and reconsider the event, but the party allegedly proceeded with its mobilisation. He said the resulting confrontation prompted security agencies to intervene and restore order.

The SSG maintained that the airport incident involved the NDC and federal authorities responsible for the facility, rather than the state government.

On the attack at the NDC secretariat, Onyia said the police were investigating the incident. He identified an injured party member as 43-year-old Ifeanyi Nworie, who reportedly sustained a gunshot wound.

He said Nworie was taken to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Park Lane, before being transferred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu for further treatment.

“We can, therefore, authoritatively report that there were no deaths as falsely claimed by some reports and NDC leaders,” Onyia said.

The government also denied allegations that Governor Peter Mbah’s Chief Security Officer was present at the secretariat and supervised the shooting. Onyia claimed the official was with the governor at a Teachers’ Grassroots Movement rally at Okpara Square when the incident occurred.

The government condemned political violence and urged parties to embrace peaceful campaigns and issue-based engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, the government’s denial comes amid reports of attacks on NDC supporters, including footage of people fleeing amid gunfire and reports of injuries. The circumstances surrounding the secretariat incident remain under police investigation, and the allegations against any individuals have not been established.
