The immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) president of Akwa Ibom State University, Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, has died at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Enugu State, prompting the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, announced the death in a statement on Sunday, October 11, 2026, expressing grief over the loss and raising concerns about the medical attention Daniel reportedly received at the camp.
According to the statement, Daniel complained of a headache while participating in the orientation exercise and was given medication at the camp’s medical facility.
His condition reportedly worsened after taking the medication, prompting him to request that he be transferred to a hospital for further treatment.
However, Afeez alleged that approval for the transfer was delayed and that Daniel died before he could be taken to a hospital.
The NANS president further said the association had received information that a doctor later identified the medication administered to Daniel as fake.
“We were further informed that the doctor later identified the drugs administered to him as fake. These are deeply troubling allegations that require a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his tragic death,” Afeez said.
The claim concerning the authenticity of the medication has not been independently verified, and the precise medical cause of Daniel’s death has not been established in the reports reviewed.
NANS described the incident as a painful loss to the student community and called for a comprehensive investigation to determine what happened, including the medication administered and the reported delay in arranging hospital treatment.
The association also urged relevant authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the death are properly examined and that any established lapses are addressed.
Daniel’s death has left members of the Akwa Ibom State University community, former colleagues and other student leaders mourning his loss.
NANS extended its condolences to his family, friends and associates, while saying it would communicate further actions and its official position on the matter in due course.
As of the latest reports, a detailed public response from the NYSC authorities addressing the allegations had not been identified.
The circumstances surrounding Daniel’s final hours remain a subject of concern, with calls for a transparent investigation into the allegations involving medication and access to timely medical care at the orientation camp.
