The 10th Sokoto State House of Assembly, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Tukur Bala Bodinga, has called on the state government to expedite the completion of the Kojiyo Bridge in Goronyo Local Government Area. The resolution followed the adoption of a motion moved by Hon. Nasiru Adamu (Goronyo Constituency) and seconded by Hon. Kabiru Dauda (Gada East Constituency) during the Assembly’s plenary session on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
Hon. Adamu highlighted the urgency of the project, citing a recent tragic incident in which a boat carrying more than 50 passengers capsized, resulting in multiple deaths and missing persons. He reminded lawmakers that residents currently rely on water transport due to the incomplete bridge, a situation fraught with serious safety risks.
Supporting the motion, Hon. Abubakar Shehu (Yabo Constituency) emphasized the bridge’s potential benefits for public safety, economic activity, and community health. By unanimous consent, the House resolved to urge the state government to direct the contractor responsible for the project to accelerate work on the bridge, aiming to reduce dependence on hazardous water transport and prevent future accidents.
The Assembly concluded its business for the day and adjourned until Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at 10 a.m., as moved by the Majority Whip, Hon. Abdullahi Alhaji Zakari (Rabah Constituency).
The delayed completion of Kojiyo Bridge poses ongoing risks to residents, particularly in light of recent accidents. Without swift action, waterway travel remains a dangerous necessity, potentially resulting in more fatalities. The Assembly’s unanimous call underscores growing public pressure on authorities to prioritize infrastructure projects with direct safety implications.
