In a bid to bolster the credibility of the upcoming local government elections, a high-powered delegation from the Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission (GOSIEC) paid a courtesy visit to the state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday. The delegation, led by the Permanent Commissioner for Planning, Research, and Statistics, Dr. Abubakar Abdullahi, who represented the GOSIEC Chairman, was received by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris.
During the meeting, Dr. Abdullahi commended INEC for its significant technological and procedural advancements over the past decade, highlighting the seamless deployment of technology as a model for sub-national electoral bodies. The primary purpose of the visit, however, was to formally request technical support and collaboration from INEC as GOSIEC begins preparations for the local government elections scheduled for April 2026. To demonstrate their commitment to a structured electoral process, the delegation presented the official timetable and schedule of activities for the forthcoming elections to the REC.
Responding to the delegation, Dr. Idris assured GOSIEC of INEC’s continued readiness to provide support, particularly in the areas of technical assistance and personnel training. He emphasized that “the success of any electoral body strengthens the entire democratic framework of the nation” and reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to aiding sister agencies in conducting free, fair, and credible elections.
Dr. Idris also briefed the GOSIEC delegation on the progress of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in the state, underlining its critical role in ensuring an inclusive and transparent electoral process. Political observers have described the collaborative meeting as a positive step toward enhancing the integrity and transparency of Gombe State’s upcoming local government elections, signaling a strengthened partnership between electoral institutions in the country.
