Former Delta State governor Ifeanyi Okowa has formally declared his intention to contest the Delta North senatorial seat in the 2027 general election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, marking a significant political shift for one of the most prominent figures in the Niger Delta political landscape.
Okowa made the declaration at his residence in Asaba during a high level political gathering of leaders from the Delta North senatorial district. The meeting brought together stakeholders drawn from the nine local government areas of the district, including current and former lawmakers, party officials, and community leaders who convened to deliberate on the political future of the zone ahead of the next election cycle.
The delegation was led by the Delta State deputy governor Monday Onyeme, and included notable political actors such as former House of Representatives minority leader Ndudi Elumelu and federal lawmaker Nnamdi Ezechi, who represents the Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, and Ukwuani federal constituency. At the meeting, a formal motion urging Okowa to enter the senatorial race was moved and seconded, receiving unanimous endorsement from attendees.
Okowa, while responding to the appeal, expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him by the political leaders and described the show of support as deeply humbling. He stated that the unity demonstrated by stakeholders across the district reflected a shared desire for experienced leadership at the national level.
He said he initially intended to consult more widely across local government areas before making any public declaration but was persuaded by the consensus position of leaders present. According to him, the scale of endorsement left him with little option but to accept the request to contest, describing politics as a continuous learning process requiring humility and engagement with constituents.
In his remarks, Okowa formally accepted the call to run for the Senate, declaring his readiness to represent Delta North in the upper chamber of the National Assembly if elected. He pledged to rely on the support of the Anioma people and political stakeholders across the district, recalling earlier phases of his political journey when he enjoyed similar backing during his 2011 senatorial bid and subsequent governorship campaigns.
The former governor’s announcement is already generating significant political interest across Delta State, given his previous tenure as senator and governor and his influence within both state and national politics. His decision to contest under the All Progressives Congress also signals a notable realignment, as he previously held leadership positions within the Peoples Democratic Party during his time in office.
A key moment in his address was his expression of regret over past political decisions, particularly his support for the emergence of Senator Ned Nwoko as representative of Delta North in the National Assembly. Okowa described this as a mistake, offering an apology to stakeholders and constituents who may have been dissatisfied with the outcome of that political development.
The sitting senator Ned Nwoko, a businessman and politician, currently represents Delta North in the National Assembly. His election in the previous cycle followed a competitive political process that reshaped the leadership dynamics of the district. Okowa’s remarks are expected to intensify political discussions within the constituency as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gain momentum.
Political observers note that Delta North remains one of the most competitive senatorial districts in Delta State, with strong participation from multiple political blocs and influential personalities. The district comprises a diverse mix of ethnic and economic communities, contributing to its complex electoral dynamics.
Supporters at the Asaba meeting described Okowa as a seasoned administrator and consensus builder whose experience as both governor and senator positions him as a strong contender for legislative leadership. They argued that his return to the Senate would strengthen representation for the district at the national level, particularly in areas of infrastructure development, resource allocation, and federal appointments.
Critics, however, suggest that his re entry into senatorial politics could further intensify existing rivalries within the district, especially given the presence of incumbent representation and emerging political actors seeking to consolidate influence ahead of 2027.
Okowa’s political trajectory has remained closely watched in Nigerian politics, particularly due to his role as a former governor of Delta State and his previous tenure as deputy governor and senator. His recent alignment with the All Progressives Congress has also sparked broader conversations about shifting alliances within the Niger Delta political structure.
During the gathering, Okowa emphasised reconciliation and unity among political stakeholders, urging supporters to avoid divisions that could weaken the district’s collective influence. He stated that effective representation requires cooperation across party lines and sustained engagement with community interests.
He further noted that governance and politics should remain focused on delivering tangible benefits to citizens, including economic opportunities, infrastructure development, and improved access to federal resources. According to him, legislative representation must be anchored on service delivery and responsiveness to constituent needs.
As the 2027 election cycle approaches, political activities in Delta State are expected to intensify, with various aspirants already positioning themselves across senatorial, federal, and state constituencies. Okowa’s declaration adds a new dimension to the emerging contest in Delta North, potentially reshaping alliances and electoral strategies.
Analysts believe the coming months will be crucial in determining how political dynamics unfold in the district, especially as parties begin formal consultations, candidate screenings, and coalition building. The entry of high profile figures such as Okowa is expected to influence voter sentiment and party negotiations significantly.
For now, stakeholders across Delta North appear to be assessing the implications of his declaration and apology, as well as the broader impact on the political balance within the district. The development marks a significant step in the early build up to what is expected to be a closely contested senatorial race in 2027.
Political watchers also anticipate that campaign negotiations, zoning considerations, and party primaries within both APC and other parties will play decisive roles in shaping the final electoral contest in the district ahead of the polls.
