Team Lagos made a spectacular start in the swimming competition at the ongoing 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, securing seven gold and one silver medal on the opening day. The strong performance boosted the state’s medal tally and reinforced its reputation as a powerhouse in youth sports.
In the Girls’ category, Lagos swimmers clinched four gold medals in the 100m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly, 50m Backstroke, and 4×100m Medley Relay. Their male counterparts added three gold and one silver medal in the 200m Individual Medley, 100m Backstroke, 4×100m Freestyle Relay, and 50m Freestyle events, bringing the total to eight medals.
The winning momentum extended beyond the pool. Lagos gymnasts bagged four medals — one gold, one silver, and two bronze — in the Boys’ Artistic Event. The state’s football teams also impressed, with the male side defeating host state Delta 1–0 and the female team sealing a 2–0 victory at the St. Patrick’s College Field, Asaba.
In weightlifting, Team Lagos added two silver and one bronze medal in the 55kg category, further improving its position on the medal table.
Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, attributed the impressive results to the unwavering support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. “We are proud of our swimmers, and we know they will represent Nigeria very well. We expect more wins in the coming events. Team Lagos will surely make its mark on these games,” he said.
Fatodu added that the athletes’ performances highlight the state’s commitment to nurturing young talent and fostering excellence in sports, noting that Lagos has consistently stood out as a symbol of sporting achievement in Nigeria.
