Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has approved the enrollment of all prison inmates across the state into the Osun Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS).
The initiative, according to the state government, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery for vulnerable groups and ensure inmates have access to quality medical services while in custody.
In addition to the insurance coverage, Governor Adeleke also approved free surgeries for inmates with special medical cases. This intervention is expected to provide relief to those requiring urgent medical attention and further demonstrates the administration’s commitment to humane reforms in the correctional system.
Officials explained that the decision aligns with the governor’s broader vision of inclusive governance, where no category of citizens is left behind in the state’s developmental agenda.
The move has been widely commended by rights advocates and healthcare stakeholders, who describe it as a bold step toward improving prison welfare and upholding human dignity.
