Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Monday declared open the maiden edition of the African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit 2025 in Abuja.

In his opening remarks, the Vice President underscored the urgent need for collective action and deeper cooperation among African nations to effectively combat terrorism, cybercrime, transnational crime, and other emerging security threats confronting the continent.

He urged defence chiefs to develop a fresh doctrine of continental defence anchored on trust, shared intelligence, and coordinated strategies. According to him, Africa’s security institutions must begin to “speak with one voice and act with one purpose” in tackling challenges that transcend national boundaries.

Shettima highlighted the diverse nature of insecurity, noting that it ranges from insurgency in desert regions, piracy along Africa’s coasts, cybercrime in digital spaces, to transnational criminal networks that destabilize economies. He emphasized that none of these threats respects borders, and Africa’s response must be equally borderless and united.

The summit, which attracted defence leaders and security experts from across the continent, aims to chart new frameworks for regional peace, stability, and collective defence.
