The 11th Plateau State Council on Health concluded successfully in Jos, marking a significant return after a 13-year hiatus and signaling renewed commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) across the state.
Held over four days from August 18 to 21, 2025, at Crispan Hotel and Suites, the council, themed “Repositioning Plateau State Health Systems Towards Achieving Universal Health Coverage,” provided a crucial platform for dialogue, innovation, and policy formulation aimed at strengthening the state’s healthcare delivery systems.
During the event, the Plateau State Drugs and Medical Commodities Management Agency (PS-DMCMA) presented two impactful proposals. The first called for the establishment of a state-owned pharmaceutical manufacturing plant to tackle recurring drug shortages and high medicine costs. The initiative aims to ensure a reliable and affordable supply of essential drugs, reduce reliance on external sources, boost local economic development, and create jobs for residents.
The second proposal, “Progress Report and Advocacy for Strengthening Essential Medicines Supply System,” highlighted PS-DMCMA’s successes in streamlining drug distribution and improving the availability of medicines in public health facilities. The agency also endorsed a proposal by the Government House Clinic for the creation of the Plateau State Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment, and Mental Health Services, emphasizing the growing importance of mental health and substance abuse prevention alongside physical health.
Speaking at the closing session, Pharm. Kim Jerry Bot, Director-General of PS-DMCMA, commended Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicolas Baamlong, for his leadership in hosting the council and shaping discussions that will influence healthcare policy in the state. He further praised Governor Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for his unwavering support and vision in advancing accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare, noting that the Governor’s leadership has been instrumental in recent progress.
The council concluded with stakeholders united in a shared commitment to improving health outcomes, leaving Plateau State better positioned to achieve Universal Health Coverage and ensure comprehensive, sustainable healthcare for all residents.
