The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, has announced a new collaboration between Nigeria and Brazil aimed at strengthening biotechnology in the country’s cotton sector to enhance sustainability, traceability, and productivity.
Nnaji made the remarks during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent state visit to Brazil, where the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Science, Technology, and Innovation.
The partnership focuses on technological transfer and cooperation in cotton production, leveraging Brazil’s expertise in crop optimization, pest resistance, and seed performance trials. Research data from the Brazilian Cotton Association (ABRAPA) will also be shared with Nigerian institutions, including the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), and the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), to support local adaptation and innovation.
Chief Nnaji emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s eight-point agenda, particularly advancing food security, economic growth, job creation, and energy transition in Nigeria.
