Transport Minister Orders Investigation After Abuja-Kaduna Train Derailment

The Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, has acted swiftly following a train derailment that occurred on 26th August 2025 at Jerre along the Abuja-Kaduna route.

Senator Alkali directed the formation of a multi-stakeholder committee to probe the incident, determine its immediate and underlying causes, and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences while enhancing rail safety and operational efficiency in Nigeria.

Expressing concern for the safety of passengers, the Minister appointed the following members to the committee: Musa O. Ibrahim (DOOPST) as Chairman; Prof. Danwaka Shuaibu (STA, HMT); Engr. Zirra Finbar (D, RTS); Barr. Omotola Olusegun (D, Legal) as Member/Secretary; Dr. Kayode Opeifa (MD, NRC); Engr. I.A. Ebuniwe (Inspector Railway); representatives from Technics Engineering & Architecture Marketing Nigeria Ltd and CCECC; a civil society representative; and male and female passenger representatives.

The committee is expected to carry out a comprehensive investigation and provide actionable recommendations aimed at strengthening the safety and reliability of Nigeria’s rail transport network.
