Atiku Accuses Tinubu Administration of Neglecting North-Central Amid Rising Killings

Published on 3 September 2025 at 08:12

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, alleging that the government has abandoned the North-Central region to escalating violence and bloodshed.

Atiku, in a statement on Tuesday, lamented that states such as Kwara, Niger, Plateau, and Benue have become epicenters of killings, kidnappings, and terror attacks under the current government. He noted that Niger State in particular has witnessed brazen assaults on military bases, the killing of soldiers, and even massacres of worshippers in mosques, while Plateau and Benue continue to record mass burials from recurring attacks.

He pointed out that by May 2025, only two years into Tinubu’s presidency, more than 10,000 lives had been lost in Northern states, with Benue alone accounting for over half of the fatalities. According to him, the killings have not slowed down, as mass violence continues on a weekly basis with little visible government response.

“This is a monumental failure in the basic duty of securing lives and property,” Atiku declared, accusing the Federal Government of looking away while communities are ravaged.

The former Vice President also faulted the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), claiming that instead of addressing insecurity, the party has resorted to using thugs, infiltrators, and hired hooligans to disrupt opposition gatherings in states such as Kaduna, Kebbi, and Ogun. He criticized security agencies for failing to act during such incidents and, in some cases, blaming victims rather than perpetrators.

Atiku warned that violence as a political tool is unsustainable, stressing that any politician who relies on intimidation and bloodshed to win elections is not only desperate but also a danger to Nigeria’s democracy.

He further reminded the Nigeria Police that they are funded by taxpayers and owe allegiance to the constitution rather than to the ruling party. “Your duty is to remain neutral, fair, and constitutional. Anything less is a betrayal of public trust,” he said.
