Nigeria and China Strengthen Ties on Humanitarian Aid and Poverty Reduction

The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China have expressed readiness to deepen cooperation in humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction, with both countries highlighting shared experiences and mutual opportunities for partnership.

This commitment was reaffirmed during a courtesy visit by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Yu Dunhai, to the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, on Thursday, September 4, 2025, in Abuja.

Dr. Sununu, while acknowledging the goodwill of the Chinese government, emphasized that Nigeria was eager to draw lessons from China’s success in addressing poverty. He outlined Nigeria’s pressing humanitarian challenges, ranging from acute child malnutrition, displacement, and refugee crises to the impacts of climate change. According to him, priority areas for collaboration include durable solutions for displaced persons, skills-to-wealth training programmes, and capacity building for frontline workers tasked with delivering humanitarian assistance.

Ambassador Yu Dunhai noted that Nigeria and China share similar demographic pressures, pointing to China’s population of 1.4 billion people and its historic battle with hunger. He highlighted that China had, in the past decade, successfully lifted millions out of poverty through a combination of agricultural reforms, industrialization, food security, education, and development-focused policies. The envoy reaffirmed China’s willingness to share this expertise with Nigeria, stressing that tackling poverty requires a comprehensive approach that secures both livelihoods and national stability.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Yakubu Adam Kofarmata, expressed gratitude for China’s interest, especially in supporting humanitarian responses and staff training. He assured that Nigeria would work closely with the Chinese Embassy to translate these discussions into practical results.

The partnership signals a new phase in Nigeria-China relations, one focused not only on trade and infrastructure but also on tackling the human challenges of poverty and vulnerability.
