The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, has highlighted the importance of customs reforms and trade facilitation as key drivers for unlocking Africa’s economic potential and enhancing the global competitiveness of African exporters.

Speaking on Friday, 5th September 2025, at the ongoing Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2025) in Algiers, Algeria, Adeniyi emphasized that the Nigeria Customs Service, in collaboration with other African customs administrations, is committed to promoting transparency, efficiency, and innovation across the continent’s trade systems.

“Customs reforms are no longer optional; they are essential for Africa to realise its full potential in trade,” he stated. “Prioritising efficiency, transparency, and innovation will strengthen African exporters and advance continental integration.”

He noted that Nigeria has implemented wide-ranging modernisation programmes, including digitalised clearance processes, enhanced enforcement mechanisms, and capacity-building initiatives, aimed at creating a seamless trading environment.

The Intra-African Trade Fair, inaugurated in 2018, has grown into the continent’s premier platform for trade, investment, and economic exchange, with the 2025 edition expected to generate $44 billion in deals. CGC Adeniyi said ongoing customs reforms align with African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) objectives and position Nigeria as a regional hub for trade facilitation and industrial growth.

A highlight of the event was the announcement that Nigeria has secured hosting rights for the next edition, IATF2027. Adeniyi described this as an opportunity to showcase the impact of Nigeria’s trade and customs reforms, underscoring the country’s leadership in regional integration and economic development.

“Hosting IATF2027 allows Nigeria to demonstrate how Customs can drive sustainable economic growth through a transparent, efficient, and technology-driven system,” the CGC added.
