The Yobe State House of Assembly has taken a major step toward strengthening environmental sustainability with the advancement of an executive bill seeking the establishment of the Yobe State Great Green Wall Agency.
The bill, presented by the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni, scaled second reading after extensive deliberations on the floor of the House. It aims to institutionalize programs on afforestation, reforestation, land restoration, and other initiatives targeted at combating desertification in the state.
Leading the debate, the Majority Leader, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, explained that the proposed agency would not only tackle environmental degradation but also boost agricultural productivity, strengthen food security, and create economic empowerment opportunities. He noted that the agency would further enable Yobe State to tap into federal and international funding earmarked for the Great Green Wall programme.
In their contributions, lawmakers including Hon. Bulama Bukar (Gujba), Hon. Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa (Damaturu II), Hon. Musa Dumbol (Machina), and Hon. Kachalla Ajiya Maina (Yunusari) unanimously endorsed the bill. They emphasized its potential to create jobs for young people while driving sustainable development across the state.
Presiding over the session, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, referred the bill to the House Committee on Environment for further legislative action.
In a related development, the Assembly also considered executive bills seeking amendments to the laws establishing key tertiary institutions, including the College of Education, Gashua; College of Education and Legal Studies, Nguru; Mai Idris Alooma Polytechnic, Geidam; College of Administration, Management and Technology, Potiskum; and the College of Agricultural Science and Technology, Gujba.
