Army Chief Commissions New Infrastructure Projects at Makurdi Cantonment

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has inaugurated multiple newly completed projects at the 401 Special Forces Brigade, Joe Akaahan Cantonment in Makurdi, in a move aimed at upgrading infrastructure and improving the welfare of troops and their families.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on September 10, 2025, the Army Chief reiterated his unwavering commitment to enhancing the living and working conditions of personnel across the country. He explained that the newly delivered facilities would not only improve the quality of life within the barracks but also raise morale and strengthen operational efficiency.

Among the projects commissioned were the remodelled Joint Officers’ Mess, the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess, and the Jumpers’ Club. Also unveiled were the newly constructed residence for the Regimental Sergeant Major and modern transit accommodation for personnel. The COAS emphasized that these facilities were designed to serve both the social and operational needs of the troops, describing them as a vital boost to the overall effectiveness of the Nigerian Army. He urged beneficiaries to take ownership of the projects by putting them to good use and ensuring their proper maintenance.

The Executive Governor of Benue State, Reverend Father (Dr.) Hyacinth Alia, was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Sam Ode. Senior military officers, members of the Benue State Executive Council, and heads of security agencies were also in attendance.

As part of the occasion, the COAS and the representative of the state governor performed the symbolic planting of commemorative trees within the cantonment to mark the commissioning exercise.
