Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, accompanied by his Deputy, Ngo Josephine Piyo, has commissioned the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) Ultra-Modern Market in Bukuru, a landmark project designed to ease the burden on traders and market women while driving economic growth in the state.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, Governor Mutfwang described the project as a people-centered initiative aimed at creating a clean, safe, and organized commercial space that restores dignity to traders who for years have endured harsh conditions in their struggle to make a living. He called on Plateau sons and daughters, at home and in the diaspora, to partner with government in uplifting the living standards of citizens, stressing that unity and collaboration are essential for the progress of the state.
“This is not a time for division but for unity,” the governor said. “I call on all Plateau sons and daughters privileged to occupy positions of responsibility to join hands with the government in advancing our state. My doors remain open, and my hands of fellowship extended to all for the collective prosperity of Plateau.”
Governor Mutfwang revealed that the new facility is equipped with 165 shops, including 16 warehouses, 133 lock-up shops, and 15 small shops, as well as 116 stalls and open spaces that can accommodate more than 2,000 traders. The market also features a parking lot and motor park to improve accessibility and ease mobility. He noted that priority in shop allocation would be given to displaced women traders, underscoring his administration’s commitment to inclusivity and economic empowerment.
“This market is not just a trading hub, it is a lifeline,” he said. “Beyond Bukuru, we are making plans to reconstruct Kugiya Market, the Jos Main Market, Maraban Jama’a Market, and other neighborhood markets across Plateau. These deliberate steps will reposition our state as a safe, organized, and globally attractive destination for commerce and investment.”
Reaffirming his vision under the Greater Jos Master Plan, the governor stated that his administration is determined to deliver functional, modern cities with world-class market infrastructure capable of sustaining business growth and regional integration. He urged traders and community members to take ownership of the facility by maintaining it and using it responsibly for collective prosperity.
General Manager of JMDB, Arc. Hart Bankat, expressed gratitude to the governor for ensuring the project’s completion and acknowledged the contributions of CTM for donating land. He disclosed that the project had already entered its second phase, with more residents around the market offering land for expansion and investors pledging commitment pending government approval.
Goodwill messages were delivered by Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Daniel Gapyil Naanlong; the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, represented by Gwol Rwey Vwang, Da Gyang Balak; Executive Chairman of Jos South Local Government, Hon.
