A major milestone was recorded on Thursday at the UN House, Abuja, with the official launch of two landmark initiatives — the Sustainable Urban Integration of Displaced Populations in Northern Nigeria (SIDPIN) and the Support for Protection, Assistance and Durable Solutions (SPADS) projects, both funded by the European Union.

The event brought together a high-powered delegation that included governors of Adamawa, Benue, Kano, Sokoto, and Yobe States; the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall; the EU Head of Mission; Hon. Ministers of Budget and Economic Planning, Housing, and Humanitarian Affairs; the Director General of NEMA; Country Directors of UNHCR, IOM, DRC, UN-Habitat; and other senior government officials and development partners.

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, who was represented by the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Arc Ahmed Buba, reaffirmed his administration’s full commitment to the projects. He noted that Yobe has already taken proactive steps by providing land, planning support, and coordination frameworks to ensure the success of the initiatives.

According to him, the SIDPIN and SPADS programmes represent more than humanitarian relief, describing them as strategic pathways to durable solutions, social cohesion, and urban resilience. He stressed that displacement should not be viewed as a permanent condition but as a challenge that can be addressed through vision, strong partnerships, and collective commitment.

The Governor further pledged effective accountability mechanisms and monitoring systems to ensure transparency and to guarantee that affected populations directly benefit from the interventions. He thanked the EU, the United Nations, and other partners for their continued support, assuring them that the Yobe State Government will continue to align the projects with its Action Plan on Durable Solutions and IDP policies.

The launch, which was attended by stakeholders from across Nigeria and the international community, was described as a turning point in the country’s efforts to strengthen resilience, dignity, and sustainable opportunities for displaced persons and their host communities.
