Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has directed the immediate acceleration of the Federal Government’s ₦250 billion credit support programme for smallholder farmers, aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening food security across the country.
The directive came during the sixth meeting of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU) held earlier today in Abuja. The Vice President emphasized that the funds, to be disbursed at a single-digit interest rate, must reach the intended beneficiaries without bureaucratic delays.
Shettima tasked the PFSCU with developing a clear implementation roadmap to guide the disbursement process, stressing the need for transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the rollout. According to him, the initiative is designed to empower farmers, reduce production costs, and expand access to affordable credit at a time when food security remains a pressing national concern.
On behalf of the steering committee, the Vice President expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing the political will and backing needed to pursue bold reforms in the sector. He highlighted notable achievements, including the liberalisation of fertilizer raw materials and the establishment of the Presidential Seed Fund, which he described as game changers in driving Nigeria’s agricultural transformation agenda.
The meeting reaffirmed the government’s determination to support farmers with sustainable policies, credit access, and innovations necessary to strengthen the food system and enhance national self-sufficiency.
