His Excellency, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State, joined world leaders from government, philanthropy, private sector, and communities at the 2025 Gates Foundation Goalkeepers event in New York. The gathering, held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, focused on accelerating progress toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

Highlighting Niger State’s New Niger Vision 2055, Governor Bago reaffirmed his administration’s priority on strengthening primary healthcare systems, with emphasis on preventing, detecting, and treating childhood illnesses early. He further noted that significant investments are being directed towards capacity building for frontline healthcare workers to prepare for future health challenges.

This year’s Goalkeepers event showcased innovations in malaria control, long-acting HIV treatments, and improved vaccine delivery systems—interventions expected to save millions of lives in the coming years. For Niger State, the forum provided an opportunity to deepen partnerships and accelerate healthcare reforms in line with its vision of improved access and equity in primary healthcare.

Amid dwindling global health financing, Bill Gates announced a $900 million pledge to the Global Fund, underscoring the need to prioritize investments in people, science, and effective policies as drivers of a healthier and more sustainable future.
