Nigeria–Japan Relations Enter New Chapter of Cooperation

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs & Protocol, Adémọ́lá Oshodi, has said his meeting with Japan’s Ambassador-Designate to Nigeria, H.E. Mr. Suzuki Hideo, offered a forward-looking dialogue on the future of Africa–Asia cooperation.

Ahead of presenting his Letter of Credence, Ambassador Suzuki engaged Oshodi on key issues shaping bilateral relations, including post-TICAD9 priorities in Yokohama, Japan’s food security emergency support loan through JICA to help Africa address current vulnerabilities, and the drive to transform shared ambitions into impactful business partnerships.

The meeting also addressed recent headlines surrounding reports of a new Japanese visa category for Nigerians relocating to Kisarazu, the city recently designated as Nigeria’s “hometown” under an exchange initiative. Oshodi clarified that the program is aimed at cultural exchange and strengthening mutual understanding, not mass relocation, stressing the importance of correcting public perceptions in diplomacy.

Reflecting on the talks, Oshodi underscored that Africa–Asia relations are entering a phase where partnerships must be rooted in respect, clarity, and co-creation. He emphasized that Nigeria and Japan, as two democracies, are well-positioned to set the tone for navigating a multipolar world with mutual trust and shared purpose.

“If today’s conversation is any indication, the next phase of Nigeria–Japan relations will be defined by bold ideas, fresh opportunities, and partnerships that align ambition with action,” Oshodi stated.
