
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has pledged continued support for policies and initiatives that empower women to innovate boldly and lead with confidence. The Governor made this commitment at the 2025 WAPA Connect Conference, themed “Investing in Lagos Women, Investing in Growth,” held at Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island. Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the government’s focus on building effective partnerships, evidence-based policies, and ensuring that women across Lagos experience tangible results.
He underscored that empowering women is not only a moral imperative but also an economic and social necessity, emphasizing that a thriving society cannot leave half its population behind. The Governor noted that the Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy Roadmap is informed by the lived experiences of Lagos women from all walks of life, aiming to dismantle systemic barriers to economic participation and create opportunities across entrepreneurship, skill development, agriculture, and emerging industries.
The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs. Funmi Omotoso, highlighted the importance of financial literacy, self-reliance, and moderate parenting techniques in empowering women and strengthening families. She affirmed that her office will continue to prioritize initiatives that enhance the well-being and opportunities of women across the state.
Princess Lara Olumegbon-Oyekan, Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs, Poverty Alleviation, and Wealth Creation, described women as a transformative force in society. She reiterated that investing in women is synonymous with investing in Lagos’ growth and pledged the Committee’s continued support for programs that deliver lasting impact.
Commissioner for Women Affairs & Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, highlighted that the Ministry’s 19 Skills Acquisition Centres and empowerment initiatives have trained thousands of women, providing vocational skills, equipment, and business support. She emphasized that such interventions not only transform individual lives but also strengthen families, expand businesses, and contribute to the state’s economic development.
Permanent Secretary of WAPA, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, described the WAPA Connect platform as a hub for collaboration, partnership-building, and the creation of opportunities. She stressed that the initiative fosters inclusion, strengthens women’s voices, and facilitates progress across Lagos State.
The event reinforced the government’s ongoing commitment to inclusive, intentional, and impactful empowerment of women, aiming to ensure that no woman is left behind in Lagos State’s growth journey.
